A hole from a screw or a sensor penetrating the bottom of the trough will leak, even though only the dry cells of the window frame are involved. The trough collects and pools water that seeps through the dry cells and eventually into the wood framing below.
When sealing this type of damage, first check below the surface of the trough, inside the bottom of the damaged cell.
IMPORTANT: While the cell is open, check the wood framing below the window for dry rot. Push a probe into the wood to check for soft spots.
After checking for soft spots, seal the bottom of the damaged cell, then the top surface can be sealed (floor of the trough).
